Abscess

An abscess is a collection of pus within the tissue of the body. The Signs and symptoms of abscesses include redness, pain, warmth, and swelling. When pressed the swelling may feel fluid filled. The area of redness often extends beyond the swelling.

Abscesses can form in any place of the body. The most common sites are in armpits (axillae), areas around anus and vagina(Bartholin gland abscess), the base of the spine (pilonidal abscess), around a tooth (dental abscess), and in the groin. Inflammation around a hair follicle can also lead to the formation of an abscess, which is called a boil (furuncle).

Carbuncles and boils are types of abscess that often involve hair follicles with carbuncles being larger.

Causation: They are usually caused by a bacterial infection.

Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum : Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum is indicated in suppuration of boils and abscesses. Cannot bear to be uncovered. Wants to be wrapped up warmly. The skin is very sensitive to touch, cannot even bear touch of cloth. Offensive discharge from any skin eruption. Every little injury suppurates. Excessive sensitiveness of the parts with sharp stinging pains. It will stop formation of pus or will abort pus in few hours. It is also useful for suppuration around the roots of the nails and ends of fingers.

Silicea : Silicea is a chief remedy for abscess and boils. It is a useful remedy for promoting and controlling the process of inflammation and suppuration. The pus is thin and watery in indolent ulcers which refuse to heal. Skin is unhealthy, every injury suppurates. It also helps in crippled nails on fingers and toes. Small wounds heal with difficulty. There are painful pustular eruptions becoming suppurating ulcers. Eczematous or herpetic eruptions with dispostion to boils in various parts which are painful to touch, fistula lachrymalis, in-growing toe nails, blood boils, carbuncles, ulcers of all types. Fistulae are very painful and offensive with high spongy edges. There are abscesses at joints.

Other Remedies:

Belladonna: In acute abscesses. When pus develop with lightening rapidity.

Bryonia: When the part is red with shining with stitching pain which is worse by slightest movement.

Pyogenium: Useful for recurring abscess.
