Depression

It is a morbid sadness, dejection, or melancholy. The fundamental abnormality of an effective disorder is a disturbance of mood, either depression or mania.

Depression is by far the more commoner.

Most patients who have manic symptoms are also prone to depressive episodes but the reverse does not apply. In some patients depressive and

manic symptoms occur simultaneously or in a rapid succession.

They are of two types.

1. Primary affective disorders.

These are not secondary to any other psychiatric or physical illness but may be precipitated by a wide range of environmental factors.
They are often recurrent, if recurrences always take a depressive form the term unipolar disorder is used, if the recurrences are both
maniac and depressive the term bipolar is used.

2. Secondary affective disorders.

These follow another psychiatric or physical illness. Symptom varies considerably in severity from one patient to another and even within the individual from time to time.

There may be a diurnal variation of mood, depression being more in the morning or at the end of the day. Sleep disturbances are common.

Accompanying psychological symptoms are loss of pleasure in life, loss of interest in oneself and others, low self esteem, self blame, and hopelessness. Fatigue, headache, anorexia, weight change, constipation, poor concentration is also seen. Suicidal thinking is also common.

Helleborus Niger: Helleborus Niger is a chief remedy for treating depression. The patient is very much irritable and easily angered. He does not want to be disturbed. The patient is very much melancholic, woeful, despairing, silent or extremely anguished. It is especially suitable to girls at puberty or when menses fail to return after appearing. The patient is worse from consolation. Helleborus Niger is also suitable for many brain troubles during dentition with threatned effusion. Also unconscious and stupid when questioned and answers slowly. Helleborus Niger also helps in homesickness.

Kali Phosphoricum: Kali Phosphoricum is a suitable remedy depression. The patient is very nervous, depressed and general irritability. There is great despondency about business and loss of memory. Indisposition to meet people. The patient is shy with no inclination to converse. Want of energy, slightest labour seems heavy task. Also brain fag from over work. Anxiety and nervousness. Gloomy and always looks at the dark side of every thing. There is extreme lassitude and depression. There are hallucinations and illusions of senses. Also helps in anemic conditions.
