Anxiety is the feeling of fear, dread, and uneasiness that may occur as a reaction to stress. A person with anxiety may sweat, feel restless and tense, and have a rapid heartbeat.
Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress and can actually be useful in some situations. For some people, however, anxiety can become excessive and they may also have difficulty controlling it and it may negatively affect their day-to-day living.
Anxiety disorders are a category of disorders characterized by feelings of anxiety and fear. These feelings may cause physical symptoms, such as increasing heartbeat and shakiness.
There are a wide variety of anxiety disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and panic disorder to name a few. The disorders given below are among the most common mental disorders experienced by people.
Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD)
It is a condition marked by excessive worry and feelings of fear, dread, and uneasiness that last six months or longer.
Everyone feels frightened or very scared every once in a while but some people end up constantly worrying about practically everything. If fears and anxiety are overshadowing everything else and not going away, it may be that the person has developed generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Their fears become excessive and they are unable to control them but there are treatments to get out of these difficult situations also.
Generalized anxiety disorder can have both emotional and physical symptoms. The emotional symptoms include constant, unrealistic and increased fears and thoughts, that can affect different parts of someone's life. They are not a response to a threat and are not related to concrete things or situations. If this feeling of anxiety can be associated with just about anything, it is referred to as "generalized" anxiety.
Obsessive compulsive disorder
It is an anxiety disorder in which a person has intrusive ideas, thoughts, or images that occur repeatedly, and in which he or she feels driven to perform certain behaviours over and over again.
Forgetting to do something important when you leave home — like turning off the lights or locking the door — is a common worry and it is a good idea to double-check if you are not absolutely sure. But some people are so worried about forgetting few things that they feel the urge to check over and over again, and that urge may gradually come to dominate their life. Others may constantly wash their hands because they are afraid of germs, while few others cannot keep from always needing to count things. Regardless of the kind of ritual they may have, people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are simply unstoppable.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder covers both obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviour. Obsessive thoughts are constant and continuous thoughts that are very hard to shake. Although people with OCD feel that the thoughts are nonsensical and unpleasant, it is difficult to simply stop them using willpower alone.
