Sprain

Sprain is a joint injury in which some of the fibres of supporting ligament are ruptured but the continuity of the ligament remains intact.

It means only ligamentous injury.

This condition gives raise to tremendous pain. The diagnosis is made by
1. The presence of tenderness on the ligament particularly at its bony attachment.
2. Passive stretching of the ligament will cause excruciating pain.
3. There is no local bony tenderness or local bony irregularity.
4. X - ray shows no bony injury

Dislocation also appears like sprain, but it can be differentiated by the following features.

Dislocation is a condition in which one bony component loses its contact completely with the other bony component of the joint. If it retains partial contact it is called subluxation.

It is diagnosed by
1. The deformity
2. Abnormal swelling near the joint
3. Rigidity of the joint in passive movements and x- ray.

Homeopathic Remedies:

Chief Remedies:

Arnica Montana: sore, lame, bruised feeling; pain as if beaten; fear of being touched or approached. Arnica tincture can be gently massaged on the injured part provided that the skin is intact.

Bryonia: the affected joint is painful, swollen and distended; least motion aggravates pain; better from rest.

Ledum Palustre: the injured part is cold and numb; much swelling; easy spraining of ankles; better by cold applications.

Rhus Toxicodendron: affected joint is hot, swollen and painful; better after moving about; first motion is painful; stiffness, soreness and tearing pains better from motion.

Ruta Graveolens: can also be given after arnica; wrists feel as if sprained; torn, wrenched, over-exerted, over-strained tendons or ligaments; bruised periosteum (outer bone); worse from cold wet weather.
