Headache

Headache is one of the most common and difficult clinical problems in medicine. In majority of patients, the cause is trivial and reversible and a careful clinical history and examination should be done to avoid investigation.

Causes

It may be due to lesions in near by structures such as the eye and ear, causing referred headache, it may be due to meningeal irritation, vascular disturbance, traction and distortion of intracranial structures, or due to psychogenic causes.

Homeopathic Treatment:

Chief Remedies:

Aconite: suddenly after exposure to cold dry winds; anxiety and restlessness; better in open air.

Arsenicum Album: periodical headaches with burning pains; better for sometime by cold applications, returns stronger afterwards; anxiety, restlessness, thirst or small quantities of water at small intervals.

Belladonna: throbbing pain especially in forehead, obliging the patient to close his eyes; red face, hot head and cold feet; pain worse from light, noise, jar, lying down and in afternoon. Better by pressure, wrapping up, tight bandaging, and in semi-erect posture.

Bryonia: bursting, splitting headache as if every thing would be pressed out; as if hit by a hammer within; worse from slightest motion, opening eyes, stooping; wants to lie perfectly still; better by pressure.

Gelsemium: headache starts from the nape of neck and stiff over to head; better by lying with head high and by profuse urination.

Glonoinum: sun headaches, increasing and decreasing with the sun; from exposure to sun.

Ipecacuanha: pain in head extending downwards to teeth and root of tongue; constant nausea, clean tongue, thirstlessness.

Natrum Muriaticum: headaches which appear periodically with great severity; anemic headaches of school girls; worse in the morning, on awakening, menstruation, at sea side, and from sunrise to sunset.

Nux Vomica: headache every morning on waking; worse after eating, mental exertion, and after stimulants; headache in people with sedentary life style.

Pulsatilla: headaches from over work, after rich food, over-eating; constantly changing pains; better in open air and by bandaging; absence of thirst.

Sanguinaria: right sided headache, every seventh day, increasing and decreasing with the sun; better by lying Down in a quiet dark room, vomiting, and sleeping.

Spigelia: pain beneath frontal eminence and temples, extending to eyes; periodical, violent and throbbing pain, which begins in the occiput mostly during mornings and spreads over the head to settle over the left eye and left temple; aggravation from touch, noise, turning; better by lying on right side with head high and by firm pressure.

Sulphur: headaches appearing every week or two week, with every weakening; worse early morning; headache with empty gone sensation at 10 – 11a.m.
