Hoarseness

Hoarseness occurs either as a complication of cold, catarrh, loud talking or singing, or due to infection in the larynx. It is termed as laryngitis.

Laryngitis is of two types, Acute and Chronic.

1. Acute laryngitis
The throat is dry and sore. The voice is at first hoarse the then reduced to whisper. Speaking may be painful. There is irritating non-productive cough but the general upset is usually mild.In children the small laryngeal opening may be almost completely obstructed by oedema and viscid secretions, giving rise to strider. It usually clears up in few days but frequently recurring episodes may predispose to chronic laryngitis.
Downward spread of the infection may cause inflammation of the trachea, bronchi or even pneumonia.

2. Chronic laryngitis
The main causes are
- Repeated attacks of acute laryngitis
- Excessive use of voice, especially in dusty atmosphere
- Heavy tobacco smoking
- Mouth breathing from nasal obstruction
- Chronic infection of nasal sinuses.

The chief symptom is hoarseness and the voice may be lost completely. There is irritation of the throat and a spasmodic cough.

Homeopathic Treatment:

Chief Remedies:

Argentum Nitricum: hoarseness and loss of voice in singers; chronic laryngitis.

Causticum: burning and soreness in throat; hoarseness from exposure to cold dry weather, severe winter weather; worse in morning;

Gelsemium: hoarseness and aphonia from paretic condition of laryngeal muscles.

Phosphorus: hoarseness with cough; worse evening; desire for icy cold things.

Selenium: hoarseness from long-taking; hoarseness of singers.
