Varicose Veins

A vein is called 'varicose' when it is dilated and tortuous.

There are various places in the body where veins show tendency towards varicosity e.g. veins of the lower limb, spermatic veins, oesophagus veins and haemorrhoidal veins.Of all these the varicose veins of lower limbs are frequently encountered.

Causes

It mostly occurs due to incompetence of their valves. Incompetence of valves, may be a sequel of venous thrombosis.
The tone and contractility of the muscles of the lower limb being encircled by a tough deep fascia also plays a major role.
It occurs commonly in those whose works demand standing for long hours e.g conductors, drivers of trams etc. Yet it is not uncommon in women.

Varicosity may also be predisposed by any obstruction which hampers venous return e.g. tumours, pregnancy,

Symptoms

The commonest symptom is the pain which is aching sensation felt in the whole of the leg or in the lower part of the leg according to the position of the varicose vein particularly towards the end of the day. The pain gets worse when the patient stands up for a long time and is relieved when he lies down.

Hamamelis Virginiana: Hamamelis virginiana has marked action on varicosities. It chiefly effects the veins and capillaries. Varicose veins may be in oesophagus( oesophageal varices), rectum( piles ), abdomen, legs, pampiniform plexus of veins of scrotum. Veins dilate, elongate and become tortuous and bleed easily. Blood is dark, ulceration of the varicose veins. Extreme soreness of the part. Scarcely able to to move because of pain.

Calcarea Flourica: Calcarea Flourica is a chief remedy for varicose and enlarged vein. Valvular diseases with varicose or enlarged veins. Varicose veins especially of vulva in females.

Pulsatilla: When the affected parts are bluish and sore. Better in open air.
