Common Cold

Acute coryza is also called as common cold.

The onset is usually sudden with a burning and tickling sensation in the nose accompanied by sneezing.

The throat often feels dry and sore, the head feels 'stuffed' and there is propose watery nasal discharge.

The symptoms last for one to two days after which with secondary inflation, the secretion becomes thick and purulent and impedes nasal breathing.

However nasal allergy rather than viral infection is suggested in patients complaining of frequent attacks of cold.

Coryza may lead to sinusitis which can become chronic, particularly in the maxillary sinuses, causing persistent discharge from the front and back of the nose, often accompanied by nasal obstruction and headache.

Other complications are infections of the lower respiratory tract, occlusion of the tube in the ear causing deafnes and inflamation of the middle ear.

Homeopathic Treatment:

Chief Remedies:

Aconite: after exposure to cold dry winds; suddenness of the symptoms; watering of eyes, sneezing; increased thirst for large quantities; fear, anxiety and restlessness; initial stages of cold.

Allium Cepa: profuse and acrid nasal discharge and bland water from eyes; worse indoors and better outdoors, in open.

Belladonna: hot feeling; congestion with rush of blood to face; thirstlessness.

Bryonia: coryza with shooting and aching in the forehead; worse from motion; dryness of nose, lips, mouth and throat with great thirst.

Euphrasia: eyes water all the time; lachrymation is acrid while nasal discharge is bland.

Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum: nasal discharge initially is watery which becomes thick greenish or yellowish later; sneezes every time he goes into cold, dry wind with running of nose; very chilly patient.

Kali Bichromicum: coryza with obstruction of nose; violent sneezing; thick, stringy, yellowish discharge.

Pulsatilla: greenish or yellowish discharge; better in open air; thirstlessness.
