Earache

Earache may occur due to inflammation of the external or middle ear.

1. The inflammation of the external ear is called as External otitis. It is also called "telephonist' ear"

It is often fungal in origin and may start as a dry, scaly eczema. Irritation, discharge, and minimal deafness are the

symptoms - secondary bacterial infection introduced by scratching the ear leads to further discharge and pain.

2. The inflammation of the middle ear is either acute or chronic.

Acute otitis media - It is secondary to an upper respiratory infection, and presents as severe prolonged earache with fever
and systematic illness. The pain is felt deep in the ear, is excruciating and extends over the whole of the affected side of
the head. More usually, the eardrum is reddened in appearance. Vomiting may be a presenting symptom.

Chronic otitis media - In this, the perforation is present, even though it may be dry most of the time. The perforation is usually dry, but may have profuse mucoid discharge if the middle ear mucosa is irritated or infected by cold or by water reaching it through the perforation.

There is no age exempt from it, but in childhood it is especially prevelent, though it is often not recognized.

Homeopathic Treatment:

Chief Remedies:

Aconite: sudden pain after exposure to cold dry winds; ear red, hot swollen; worse at night.

Belladonna: tearing pain in a downward direction; pains come suddenly and disappear suddenly.

Chamomilla: intolerable paroxysmal pain causing sudden screams; extreme sensitivity to pains; earache with toothache.

Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum: pain aggravated by exposure to cold and better by warmth, wrapping up; pain due to boil in ear; suppuration imminent.

Other Remedies:

Pulsatilla: violent pain as if from something forcing outwards; better by cold and in open air; worse evening; thick yellowish discharge from ear.
