Pre-menstrual Symptoms (PMS)
Many women experience premenstrual symptoms 7-10 days before the onset of bleeding; irritability, lassitude, malaise, headache, intestinal upsets such as constipation, frequency of micturition, and a feeling of fullness in the breasts, abdomen, face and feet. All these symptoms become exaggerated and form a well- marked psychosomatic disorder called Premenstrual symptoms.
In some cases there is demonstrable water retention and a weight gain of 1 to 5 kg. The breast symptoms are particularly marked and give rise to a feeling of fullness, weight, and tenderness. Some patients may also notice a type of migraine and disappears with pregnancy.
It has been suggested that the main constant factor is an increase in the extracellular water through out the body, possibly due to excessive oestrogen production.
