Worms

Infections caused by the worms or helminths usually infest human intestines.

1. Trematodes or flukes
Eg. Schistosomia haematobium (Bilharziasis) S. mansoni

2. Cestodes or tapeworms
Eg. Taenia saginata, Taenia solium

3. Nematodes or round worms, or thread worms.
Eg. Enterobius vermicularis (Thread worm), Ascaris lumbricoides (round worm), Ancylostoma duodenale (hook worm)

Much morbidity is caused can in the tropics by helminths and they are an important cause of imported disease in temperate countries.

Many helminths have a complicated life cycle, often involving one or more intermediate host.

- Only Strongyloides stercoralis can complete it's life cycle within man.

- Diseases may be caused by invasive larval stages (e.g. tropical pulmonary eosinophilia), adult worms (e.g. hookworms), or their progeny, either eggs (e.g.schistosomiasis), or microfilariae (e.g. onchocerciasis).

Adult worms may be present in the body before, or without, producing disease.

Sometimes larval stages that normally develop in intermediate hosts cause disease in man (e.g. cysticercosis). Man may also suffer from invasion by larval stages of worms that normally only infect other animals (e.g. hydatid disease).

Causes

Eating green vegetables that grow on damp soils, on which dogs and jackles ease themselves. It is these animals that pass the eggs of these worms with their stools; and the eggs sticking to the vegetables, are hatched when they get inside those who eat those vegetables.

Children with uncut nails, while digging such ground or playing with dust retain the eggs under the nails and swallow them with the food.

Worms also get in with diseased meats, sugars, unripe fruits and stale fish by increasing mucus, furnish food for the worms and help their growth.

Symptoms

Itching of anus, gnashing of teeth at night, convulsions, Itching of the tip of the nose, capricious appetite fretful temper, passing urine in bed at night, water-brash, pallor, wasting, cholera like vomiting and purging, disturbed sleep, pain in the abdomen are the main presenting features.
