Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye. It is also referred as " Pink eye". In acute form it is highly contagious.

Causes are infective, viral or allergic.

In the new born it can be serious, and gonococcal and Chlamydial infection must be excluded.

Symptoms are grittiness, redness, pain and discharge.

Allergic form of conjunctivitis usually worse in spring and early summer, and often associated with other allergic problems such as hay fever. Clinically, most signs are under the upper lid which may have a cobblestone appearance instead of a smooth surface.

A similar condition may be seen in soft contact lens wearers.

Viral conjunctivitis has become much more common.

Vision is not affected in conjunctivitis, but with some virus infections keratitis may be present, and result in visual loss and pain.

Homeopathic Treatment:

Chief Remedies:

Aconite: conjunctivitis after exposure to dry winds; heat, dryness and burning in the eyes; aggravation in the evening.

Allium Cepa: acute conjunctivitis with profuse, non-excoriating lacrimation and copious, watery, excoriating discharge from nose.

Apis Mellifica: cold water gives great relief; conjunctivitis is bright red and puffy; sensitivity of eyes to light; aggravation in evening, when near a warm stove.

Belladonna: useful in initial stages; sudden attacks with severe pain; conjunctiva is bright red; better in dark room.

Euphrasia: profuse excoriating lacrimation with profuse, clear, bland coryza; eyes are agglutinated in the morning.

Pulsatilla: used in later stages; itching and burning; discharge is thick, profuse, bland and yellow greenish in color; better in open air.
