Gout

Gout is an inflammatory disease caused by deposition of monosodium urate mono hydrate crystals in an around synovial joints.

It is not a single disease.

The term is used to describe a no.of disorders in which crystals of urate derived from body fluids give rise to inflammatory arthritis, cellulitis, inflammation of the synovial membranes, bursae, urolithiasis and renal disease.

It is the most common inflammatory arthritis in men and in older women.

The risk of developing gout increases with age and with serum uric acid levels, which are noramally distrubed in general population.

Causes:

1. Increased in take of red meat, sea food.

2. Dimnished renal excretion in renal failure, lead toxicity, alchohol, and few drugs

3. Over production of uric acid in psorisis, high fructose intake, glycogen storage disease, or inherited disorders.

Symptoms:

1. It is presented with acute pain in the joint especially big toe. Knee, small joints of hand, wrist and elbow, ankle may also get affected.

2. Severe pain, extreme tenderness such that the patient is unable to wear a socks.

3. Marked swelling with overlaying red, shiny skin.

4. It is self - limiting over 5-14 days, with complete resolution.

5. There may be accompainying fever, malaise.

As the attacks subsides, itching and desquamation of over lying skin are common. Some have attacks in more than one joint. Some people never have a second episode after an acute attack.

Chief Remedies:

Benzoicum Acidum: Gouty complaints with offensive urine.

Ledum Palustre: Gout of great toe with swelling of joints, Soreness and drawing pain on stepping. Pain travels upwards and is better with cold compress.

Urtica Urens: Pain in acute gout. Urtica Urens is also useful in uric acid diathesis with rheumatism and gout alternating with urticaria.
