Back pain is a common symptom that affects 60 -80% people at some or the other time in their
lives.

Causes

1. Mechanical back pain occurs due to excess strain. Pain varies with physical activity,improved by rest. It is mostly sudden in onset, and precipitated by lifting and bending. Pain is mostly limited to back or upper leg and recurrent episodes may occur.

2. Degenerative or prolapsed inter vertebral disc.

3. Osteo arthritis

4. Vertebral fracture

Recurrences of pain may occur and about 10-15% of patients go on to develop chronic back pain that can be difficult to treat, and may lead to chronic backache.

If there is clinical evidence of spinal cord or nerve root compression urgent investigation and treatment is needed.

Degenerative disc disease is a common cause of chronic low back pain.

Homeopathic Treatment:

Chief Remedies:

Arnica Montana: backache from injury; every thing on which the patient lies upon seems too hard; soreness and bruised pain.

Bryonia: stitches and stiffness in the small of the back; better by lying still; any movement aggravates.

Hypericum: backache from injury to nerves or spine; pressure over sacrum.

Natrum Muriaticum: pain in back with desire for some firm support; better by hard pressure.

Rhus Toxicodendron: pain and stiffness in small of back; better by continued motion, lying on something hard; worse while sitting, and initial movement.

Other Remedies:

Kali Carbonicum: Severe backache during pregnancy, after miscarriage. Small of back feels weak. Lumbago with sudden sharp pain extending up and down the back and travelling to thighs.

Aesculus Hippocastanum: Low back pain due to constipation and piles better by standing.

Dulcamara: Bachache worse in damp cold weather and bending for long hours.
