Sore throat

This catarrhal affection frequently involves the mucous membrane which covers the soft palate, tonsils and back part of the throat(fauces).

The parts redden and swell, are at first dry and afterwards covered with a whitish tough phlegm, which especially assumes on the tonsils to a certain degree an appearance of diphtheritic.

In its acute form it is mostly attended with some fever, painful swallowing a heavily coated tongue, bad taste and an increase of saliva.

Swallowing in bad cases, where the palatine and pharyngeal muscles are involved, becomes utterly impossible, so that an attempt to swallowing causes either choking or an expulsion of the fluid through the nose. For this reason, also, the voice of the patient assumes a nasal twang in talking. Sometimes the inflammation extends higher up into the naso-pharyngeal cavity, affecting the eustachian tubes and causing hardness of hearing and stitch-pain in the ears.

Causes

It is caused either by atmospheric influence like cold weather etc and a constitutiona disposition, or is part and portion of certain acute diseases, such as scarlet fever, small-pox, measles, etc. At times it may prevail epidemically.

Aconite: after exposure to cold dry winds; fear; anxiety; restlessness; increased thirst.

Belladonna: throat dry; angry looking; worse right side; feels constricted; decreased thirst.

Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum: sensitivity to cold air; sensation of a splinter in throat; worse from cold.

Lachesis Mutus: purplish colour of throat; left side more effected; swallowing of liquids is more difficult than solids; Pain into ears from throat; collar must be loose; aggravation after sleep, tight collar, touches.

Phytolacca Decandra: throat feels rough, narrow and hot; cannot swallow any thing hot; shooting pain in ears on swallowing; ulcerated sore throat.
