Irritable Bowel Syndrome

It is one of the commonest disorders of the alimentary tract ,of long- standing dysfunction associated with abdominal pain for which no organic cause can be found. Bowel habit is disturbed by diarrhoea or constipation occurring alone, or alternating. Some forms of this irritable bowel syndrome have in the past been called spastic colon and idiopathic or nervous diarrhoea.

Whilst it is generally accepted that disturbed motility in the colon forms the basis of the symptoms consistent changes which would be helpful diagnostically have not been found. Disturbance of motility have also been demonstrated in the small intestine, stomach, lower oesophagus and bladder and these help to explain the widespread nature of the symptoms.

Although the cause of IBS is uncertain, psychological disturbances, especially anxiety,are frequent. Patients are often tense, conscientious individuals who worry excessively about family or financial affairs.

Some relate the onset of their symptoms to an attack of infective diarrhoea, in others certain foods may precipitate symptoms.

Argentum Nitricum: Argentum Nitricum: Argentum Nitricum has marked action in gastric troubles like acidity, flatulent dyspepsia, heartburn and irritable bowel. The stomach is full of flatulence as if it would burst. The symptoms are worse from sweet, ice creams, emotions and lying of left side and better from eructaitons. Argentum Nitricum also works for diarrea of two types, nervous diarrhea and diarrhea due to gastric disorder. Nervous diarrhea sets in as a result of any mental emotion, nervousness etc. Great apprehension when the patient is ready to go to church, opera or appear for the examination. But the patient is better as soon as he starts performing the task. Argentum Nitricum also helps in diarrhea due to gastric disorders caused by eating sugar, candy, sweets etc. Stool is green watery looking like chopped spinach, with noisy flatus.

Kali Phosphoricum: Kali Phosphoricum is a useful remedy for irritable bowel. There is nervous gone sensation in the pit of the stomach. There is vomiting of sour, bitter food and of blood. Empty gone sensation relieved by eating. There is indigestion with nervous depression. It also helps in dysentry when stool consists of pure blood and the patient becomes delirious. Rectum burns and feels sore.
