Musculoskeletal aches and pains are extremely common and become more frequent with increasing age. More than one - third of all ' rheumatic' complaints cannot be attributed to defined diseases of the spine, peripheral joints or connective tissues. Many are trivial, self- limiting, and cause little disability. Others can become more troublesome.

The neck, shoulder girdle, back and gluteal regions are the common sites for many of these complaints. Muscular spasm of reflex origin is a prominent feature and must be differentiated from limitation of movement due to structural damage.

Certain factors may be of importance in precipitating attacks in susceptible individuals.
- Exposure to cold and damp has always been suspected as a cause of nonarticular rheumatic' complaints.
- Unaccustomed physical effort, undue fatigue, minor injuries and poor posture have also been incriminated.
Any reduction in muscular efficiency will render an individual more prone to sprains of tendons, ligaments and extra- articular soft tissue structures.
- Diffuse muscular pain and stiffness is common in certain infections, particularly of viral origin such as influenza, rubella etc. Localized pain occurs in epidemic myalgia.

Many anxious and depressed people complain of aches and pains, particularly in the region of the neck, shoulders or lower back.

Symptoms include localized pain and tenderness over the affected part.

There is also limitation of movement due to severe pains.

Rest with hot fomentation will serve improvement.

Bryonia Alba: Bryonia Alba is a chief remedy for rheumatism and arthritis. The knee joints are stiff and painful. There is hot swelling of the feet. Joints are red, swollen, hot with stiching pain relieved by absolute rest and pressure and by lying on painful side. Worse on least movement.

Rhus Toxicodendron: Rhus Toxicodendron is well indicated in rheumatism caused due to working in damp places and handling clay. Rheumatism or arthritis of any joint especially on the right side of the body. Pain is as if sprained, as if muscle or tendon were torn out from its attachment. Pain as if the bones were scrapped with a knife and the effected parts are sore to touch. There is great restlessness, anxiety and apprehension due to pain. Patient cannot stay in bed at one place. Always wants to be moved. Pain is worse in wet rainy season, on first movement and getting up in the morning. Pain is better by walking or continued motion.

Abrotanum: Rheumatic pains after checked diarrhea.

Natrum Sulphuricum: Rheumatism worse in damp cold weather.

Kalmia Latifolia: Pains travel downwards affecting the large part of a limb and passes through quickly along the course of the nerve.

Agaricus Muscarius: Pains appear diagonally from right arm to left leg with sensation of numbness and tingling.

Sepia: Rheumatic pains worse after washing clothes or laundry work.

Sulphur: Rheumatic pains with skin ailments. Cannot walk errect.
