Cough

Cough is not a disease but a symptom, it may be often present, with the irritation of the wind pipe, throat, lever, stomoch, interstines or with colds.

It points to various derangements according to the conditions which precede, accompany or follow them or by which they are brought on.

Various diseases of respiratory organs are characterized by specific cough.

Cough may be dry, without sputum, moist, during which various amounts of sputum of different quality are expectorated.

Cough is also differentiated by its length and duration of onset. It may be permanent and periodic. Periodic cough ocurs more frequently. It always occurs in influenza, acute catarrhs of the upper air ways, pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic bronchitis etc.

In Whooping cough, cough occur a in paroxysms. In asthma, the cough commences suddenly at night and abates after profuse expectoration. In phthisis there are in addition, wasting, fever, pain in the chest and bloody sputum or purulent expectoration.

Chronic loose cough is seen in chronic bronchitis.

Chief Remedies:

Aconite: cough from exposure to dry cold winds; short, dry cough; worse evening, and at night.

Antimonium Tartaricum: rattling of mucus in chest during cough but little or no phlegm comes up.

Bryonia: cough from going cold to warm air; worse by movements; pain in head, chest during coughing, must hold chest or head while coughing; increased thirst.

Drosera: prolonged periodical fits of choking cough; spasmodic cough; worse evening, after midnight.

Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum: cough from slightest exposure to cold air; sensation of some foreign body in throat; pain in throat.

Phosphorus: cough from coming to cold from warm; cough with hoarseness or loss of voice.

Other Remedies:

Pulsatilla: cough dry at night disappearing on getting up; yellowish expectoration; thirstlessness.

Rumex Crispus: dry, incessant, violent cough; cough disappears if mouth or face is covered; worse inspiring.

Spongia: cough in dry cold weather; dry hissing cough.

Bio-Combination 6: This is useful for headache with cold, sneezing with discharge due to inflamed mucous membrane and there is pain in chest , bronchitis with or without rattling sound and dyspnoea. It also helps when there is cold in the head; acute catarrh, rattling hollow cough.
